Lake Caldaro

The warmest lake in the Alps and at the same time the biggest lake where it is allowed to swim in South Tyrol, is located in the Etschtal Valley near Kaltern/Caldaro: the famous Lake Caldaro! The lake is particularly popular amongst families during summer. Swimming, splashing around, renting a pedal boat: there is a lot to explore! And those who like to be active will enjoy their stay at Lake Caldaro.

Sailing, hiking and much more

Lake Caldaro is perfect for sailing. From March to September, here you experience a fresh south wind called “Ora”, which creates perfect conditions for sailing. You can also rent a rowing boat or a surfboard and those who want to try fishing can get a licence on site.

Furthermore, the area is a true paradise for hiking. Many trails for hikes or walks offer you the possibility to spend a lot of time outdoors. Exploring the area by bike is another great thing to do. Along meadows and vineyards, you can surround the lake or visit one of the neighboring villages.

Winter in southern South Tyrol

In winter, when it is cold enough, the lake turns into an enormous natural open-air ice-skating rink. Another attraction is the traditional Christmas market in Katern/Caldaro, where you can find South Tyrolean handicrafts, homemade delicacies, and atmospheric music.

In the surroundings of Kaltern, you can find different skiing areas, which can be reached in an hour by car. During winter in South Tyrol, you can enjoy a variety of winter hiking trails, toboggan runs and romantic carriage rides.
